SEIFA 2021 by SA2: all states and territories

An SA2 is an ABS Statistical Area Level 2. It is often one suburb, but it can be several suburbs, or a large rural area. Do not read an SA2 as a suburb. SEIFA scores and deciles compare SA2s with each other across Australia, using 2021 Census data.

Method

Each row is one SA2 from Table 1 of the ABS workbook, the rows with a 9-digit SA2 code. The four indexes are scores and deciles as published. The usual resident population is the 2021 Census count. Scores are not comparable across indexes.

A blank score or decile means the ABS did not score that index for the area (the workbook shows a dash). 13 SA2s have a score on some indexes but not others, and the build checks the blanks against the ABS Table 6 flags.

A lower score means the area is relatively more disadvantaged on that index. Decile 1 is the lowest 10% of SA2s on that index, and decile 10 the highest. Deciles count areas, not people, so a decile does not say how many people live in it.

88 SA2s in the population file have no score on any index, so they have no row here. The ABS lists them in Table 6 with all four indexes flagged. Table 6 also lists 18 areas that are not in the population file. Every other population SA2 joins on sa2_code.

Checks run before publishing: every SA2 code is 9 digits and unique, every SA2 with a row is in the population CSV, the blank indexes match the Table 6 flags, and the population SA2s with no row are exactly the Table 6 no-score areas in the population file. Every score and count is a whole number.
