Census 2021 by SA2: median age, income and rent

An SA2 is an ABS Statistical Area Level 2. It is often one suburb, but it can be several suburbs, or a large rural area. Do not read an SA2 as a suburb. The figures are 2021 Census medians for each SA2, so they compare areas with each other, not with 2024-25 figures.

Columns

The definitions are the ABS wording from the metadata workbook for the DataPack (sheet "Cell Descriptors Information"). The workbook gives no population for table G02, so this page does not say which people the medians cover.

Method

Each row is one SA2 from table G02, with five of its nine columns kept. The three income and rent columns and the age are medians as published, in whole numbers.

38 SA2s have every G02 value at 0. These are areas with no usual residents, so they have no row here. 27 of them are in the population file, with very small counts; the others are not in the population file.

A rent of 0 means the area has no renters or only rent-free dwellings, so there is no median rent to publish. Those 42 rows have a blank median_rent_weekly.

Medians are estimates from Census counts, not averages. Small SA2s are noisy, so read a single SA2 with care. Some SA2s show 0 for a median income with other values present; those are kept as published.

Joined by sa2_code to the population page Population by SA2 2024-25 and the SEIFA page SEIFA 2021 by SA2.

Checks run before publishing: the header matches the expected G02 columns, every SA2 code is 9 digits and unique, every value is a whole number, the all-zero SA2s are the population codes with no row, and the rent zeros are blank. Every population SA2 with a row joins on sa2_code.
